What was your background before entering the program?
My scientific curiosity led me to study biology and psychology at the University of Ottawa. I became fascinated with neuroscience, which led me to complete my research thesis in the electrophysiology laboratory of Dr. Jean-Claude Beique, with a focus on neuroplasticity.
After years of studying human health predominantly based on the biomedical model, I was hoping to expand my understanding of the interdisciplinary field of public health. I felt a “pull” towards the MPH program at Western University. I wanted to gain skills and experience working in teams to develop real-world solutions to “wicked problems”. But most importantly, I was seeking opportunities for personal growth.
I had the chance to complete an international practicum in Hanoi, Vietnam with HealthBridge Foundation of Canada, with a focus on supporting maternal, newborn, and child health. This was my first time ever leaving Canada, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.

What has been your journey post-graduation?
I currently work as a Policy Analyst at Health Canada to support the development of a regulatory framework to protect the health of Canadians. Prior to this, I’ve held multiple positions within the federal government, including my experience as an Epidemiologist at the Public Health Agency of Canada to support infectious disease prevention and control. I have also continued to stay engaged in volunteer activities outside of my employment responsibilities.
Most recently, the pandemic has taught me the importance of maintaining balance in all areas of life. This includes commitments to self-care practices, strong social support networks, financial planning, and having meaningful pursuits in your life. I have become increasingly appreciative of my closest relationships, personal hobbies, and establishing healthy lifestyle habits. I believe these factors have contributed to my resiliency during this uniquely challenging life event.
What is one of the most important skills in public health you see in the future?
One of the most important skills you can develop to support your career in public health is establishing a growth mindset. The world is constantly changing, and life presents unpredictable situations that can sometimes be overwhelming. By embracing challenges, receiving feedback constructively, and focusing your attention on the things you can control, you can improve your ability to adapt to your environment and thrive in the workplace alongside your colleagues. My recommendation to students and alumni is to never stop learning, be willing to take on different perspectives, and to continue seeking new opportunities for personal growth.
In addition to this, there is a need for globally-minded professionals with both “soft skills” and technical expertise. We are in the early stages of the fourth industrial revolution, including rapid technological advancements and trends towards digitization - which has been further catalyzed by the pandemic. Public health can benefit greatly from professionals who have a strong understanding of novel technologies and global trends, and are willing to propose creative solutions.
Current projects or future plans?
My future plans continue to evolve in this constantly changing world. However, I am always keeping my eyes open for new opportunities nationally and internationally (especially in my areas of interest mentioned above). Beyond this, I am thrilled to be a founding member of the Western MPH Alumni Association, and plan on staying engaged for many years to come.
I remain inspired by my MPH colleagues, and look forward to hearing from students and alumni in the future. I encourage you to connect with me if you have any questions!
